Siem Reap is fun and lively, and quite in contrast to the quiet slow paced southern towns. With it's buddhist culture and tourist focus, you may think you've arrived in bali. You can eat bugs - we tried the tarantula-, get a foot massage and buy almost anything in the excellent markets. The biggest draw card to Siem Reap is of course, the temple of Angkor Wat. But there are literally hundreds of temples close to Siem Reap, all worthy of exploring. They are simply magnificent and take you back to the 12th century with their incredible sandstone carvings, and all in various states of disrepair. We visited 7 temples over 3 days. A 3 day temple pass costs US$62 per adult and can be used over a 10 day period. Children (under 12 years) are free to visit all of the temples. One of our favourite things about Cambodia is travelling around by remork (tuktuk). It is so much fun passing ancient temples with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face! And of course, after a hard day 'tomb raiding' what better than relaxing by the pool. Yes, on a back packer budget, you can get pools like these in Siem Reap! bliss. We have loved every meal in Cambodia. The food is delicious. Fish Amok, mango salad, green pepper seafood and lok lak have all been staple foods this last month. Then wash it down with a 50c beer or a coconut shake! I'm getting hungry just writing about them! |
